Corporate Social Responsibility

CSR extends beyond the statutory obligation to comply with legislation and sees organisations voluntarily taking further steps to improve the quality of life for employees and their families as well as for the local community and society at large. It is applying to business the ethical standards that many of us choose to live our lives by. Those standards are almost universally of a higher standard than the minimum set by law. In the increasingly conscience-focused marketplaces of the 21st century, purchasing behaviours are fundamentally changing. The demand for more ethical business processes and actions has been increasing for a decade or more. The internet exposes businesses to a level of scrutiny never before experienced. Customers are demanding and buying products that clearly meet ethical standards. Rainforest Alliance coffee is a good example. (http://www.rainforest-alliance.org/cafe/). At the same time, global attacks in 2008 on Starbucks credibility for leaving their taps running un-necessarily, forcing a policy change, shows how serious customers are and how vulnerable to attack are our firms and sectors. Simultaneously, pressure is being applied on industry to improve business ethics through new public initiatives and laws. There is a very close linkage between sustainable management and CSR. In fact Forté now sees the two as indistinguishable.
